Recovered Guinea Fowl carcases

THE VICTORIA Falls Anti Poaching Unit (VFAPU) has arrested a suspect for allegedly slaughtering and selling guinea fowl on a commercial scale, bringing a two-week surveillance operation to a close.

Intelligence gathered by the unit suggested the individual was processing roughly 100 kilogrammes—or two 50kg sacks—of the birds each week for sale in the resort town. A sting operation led to the seizure of eleven carcasses.

While poaching cases are often tied to subsistence, the unit was quick to push back against that framing. The accused, they noted, is gainfully employed, suggesting that profit rather than hunger drove the offence.

Conservationists argue that guinea fowl, though less iconic than elephants or rhinos, still play a meaningful role in the local ecosystem. The recent wet season has boosted their numbers, but it has also made them a more visible target. The unit believes the current daily offtake is alarmingly high and unsustainable.

The operation was supported by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and the Zimbabwe Republic Police, both of whom the unit thanked for their assistance.
