THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) announced on January 3rd the capture of Anymore Zvitsva, the alleged perpetrator behind a string of killings that have terrorised the Guruve district in recent months.

Zvitsva was apprehended not by a routine arrest, but through an operation involving drones, soldiers and a gunshot wound to his leg.

The manhunt, which escalated in late December, saw combined teams of police and the Zimbabwe National Army scour the rugged forests and mountains of Mashonaland Central province.

According to police statements, the suspect was finally located hiding in a garden.

He was shot in the left leg during the confrontation and is currently under guard while receiving treatment at an undisclosed local hospital.

The case, which has gripped the nation, involves a series of particularly brutal murders whose precise number and nature officials have yet to fully detail.

The involvement of the national army indicates the authorities viewed Zvitsva not merely as a fugitive, but as a destabilising threat to public order.

Guruve, a predominantly agricultural area, is unaccustomed to such notoriety. The killings have unsettled the tight-knit communities.

While the arrest will bring a measure of relief to the region, it also raises immediate questions. Zimbabwean authorities now face pressure to provide a comprehensive account of the crimes attributed to Zvitsva, including the total number of victims and the motives behind the attacks.

For now, a tense calm has returned to Guruve.
